Evaporative Cooling Service by Unitests

We take pride in providing a thorough and professional service for all types of evaporative coolers.

Recently, we were onsite to perform a full service and clean and sanitise on an evaporative cooler unit. This routine service uncovered a few key issues that were affecting the cooler’s performance, which we quickly resolved to ensure our client could enjoy efficient and healthy cooling throughout the summer.

Findings

Upon inspection, our licensed plumber identified two major issues with the evaporative cooler:

  1. Failed Fan Capacitor:
The fan wasn’t working properly due to a failed fan capacitor, which is a critical component that helps power the fan. Without a functional fan, the system can’t circulate air efficiently, leading to poor cooling performance. We promptly replaced the faulty capacitor onsite, restoring the cooler’s airflow and performance. This repair was carried out with an added charge and it brought the system back to full functionality.

  2. Worn Evaporative Pads:
The evaporative cooling pads, responsible for absorbing water and providing cool air, were found to be severely deteriorated. Over time, cooling pads can become clogged with dirt, mould, and mineral deposits, which not only reduces their cooling efficiency but also negatively impacts the air quality in your home. We advised the customer that the pads were beyond their effective life and recommended replacing them. Damaged pads like these can push dirt and pollutants into the duct system, which then circulates throughout the home, leading to poor indoor air quality. We provided a quote for the replacement of these pads, which will significantly improve both air quality and cooling efficiency.

Why Pad Condition is Important

Evaporative cooling pads play a crucial role in the system’s overall operation. They absorb water to cool the air passing through them, which is then distributed throughout your home. When these pads become old, dirty, or damaged, they can no longer function properly. Instead of producing clean, cool air, they might allow mould spores, dust, and debris to enter your home through the ducts. This can have serious consequences for those with allergies or respiratory issues.

In this case, the dirty pads were pushing unclean air into the home. We recommended replacing the pads as soon as possible to ensure that the cooler produces clean air and operates at its peak efficiency.

Importance of Regular Maintenance

This job is a perfect example of why regular evaporative cooler maintenance is essential. Had the fan capacitor and evaporative pads not been addressed, the system would have continued to perform poorly, increasing energy consumption and pumping unclean air into the home.

By servicing your unit annually, you can identify these issues early and avoid expensive repairs or replacements down the line. Proper servicing also ensures your system is ready to tackle the hot summer months with efficient and clean cooling.
